Canoe Sailing: In ancient times Hawaiians utilized sailing canoes for trade and warfare among the tribes of the island chain. Nowadays, the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association (HSCA) replicates those ancient voyages and cultural values. The new sailing canoes hold 6 crew and can reach speeds of up 30 mph in open water – the Hawaiian channels are known to be some of the roughest in the world, and the small and precarious sailing canoes deliver adrenaline loaded races along the stunning Hawaiian shoreline. This particular race starts on the Big Island and ends, 40 nautical miles later, in Hana, Maui. Gale force winds make the race an episode of ‘survival at sea’…

Windsurfing: What goes up has to come down, in one form or another, and this is true for even the worlds best professional windsurfers. Windsurfing in waves is a very challenging sport because there are so many factors coming into play at the same time. When something goes wrong the sailor has to be aware of the reef on the bottom and most importantly of his sail and board… one hit on the head can easily knock you unconscious. Only the best boogieboarders secure themselves a respectable position at Pipeline, on the North Shore of Oahu. To be respected by local surfers, they have to drop into the biggest, gnarliest and sometimes closeout set waves… It is a show of courage and sheer insanity…

Paddle Boarding: In open ocean paddle boarding there are two disciplines: Long distance resistance paddles and short, sprint like, close to shore races. The final of the Quiksilver World Paddleboard races on the south shore consists of an approximately 8 mile downwind race. The racers take advantage of local knowledge of currents, open ocean rollers and close to shore breaking waves that can be ridden. It always is a close head to head race, which ends at the bottom of Diamond Head volcano; The Honolulu Canoe Club.

Canoe Sailing: The 2000 crossing from the Big Island to Maui can be briefly described as survival at sea. Winds blowing at gale force through this treacherous channel with ocean swells of over 20 feet…

The canoes are hand carried over loose rocks into Keokea Bay, waves crashing onto the rocks, and this is just the beginning of what is to follow… Three boats take on water and need to be rescued on open ocean… The survivors on a fierce race towards the saving Maui shores!

Travel Paragliding: The sport of paragliding requires light winds up to 18mph. In Hawaii the conditions are very challenging. Strong winds and steep cliffs with dangerous rotating thermals make the Hawaiian pilots some of the best in the world. A team of Hawaiian decided to explore Bali, Indonesia. Highflying stunts, wing collapses and beautiful nature!!! When conventional flying gets to be routine, these pilots find their adrenaline by simply standing on the harnesses without being strapped to the wing and explore an active volcano… way too close for comfort when a violent eruption throws rocks and hot lava at the fleeing explorers!

Two world famous breaks (both break on very shallow and sharp coral reefs – a mistake can send you home with serious lacerations): Restaurants and Cloudbreak. The first closer to shore for the medium size swells and Cloudbreak out to sea for the large to gigantic swells. This segment features exciting action by Hawaiian Cully Kamasugi and friends.

Since these early years, the sport is practiced worldwide and the surfing lifestyle taken into urban and rural areas… the main problem for our landlocked friends is: lack of waves! That’s why some creative Germans created a surfing alternative for those long months away from the ocean: Grassboarding!!! A great, wheel driven board, that replicates the movements of surfing on any downhill terrain… This segment shows the land surfers bombing the hills of the German Alps.

Sailing: Some people are simply born with the need for adrenaline. Peter Herschorn is one of them. A former world class ski-trick jumper who had a bad accident on the slopes that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He moved to Hawaii and is often seen by himself riding sizable waves on his kayak. His main passion though is speed sailing. He sails a carbon fiber, kevlar constructed, high tech trimaran in gale force wind conditions – the fastest sailboat in Hawaii. HXS joins him in the waters off Hawaii for a blazing segment over and through the rough ocean swells.

In this segment HXS features several scenes of a place undisclosed to the media until today… Many professional windsurfers are unaware of this Fiji style wave, and merely wonder why the top local pros leave early or don’t show up at Diamond Head during great ocean conditions… Frank Baensch explains why the South Shore is so special during the summer months!

Travel Surfing: Surfing is without a doubt an art form at which surfers express their feelings and perception of nature. Ever wonder what this art form looks like for the fish? Since only a few breaks in world offer crystal clear water that allows a camera to capture this angle, HXS travels to Tavarua. The result is a rarely seen, surreal and peaceful view at waves and its artists from underneath. To complete the dreamlike atmosphere, Hawaii surfer Jeff Aisler believes that he is part of the "Crocodile Hunter" television series… He and friends chase down deadly seasnakes at night for an on-hand inspection!
